Radioactive Substances Regulation Environmental Principles (REPs) and Assessment of Best Available Techniques (BAT)
(Consultation starts 18 June 2008 and ends 30 September 2008)
We have developed the radioactive substance regulation environmental principles (REPs) to form a consistent and standardised framework for the technical assessments and judgements that we make when regulating radioactive substances.
The REPs provide guidance that help underpin our decisions, including those about permitting and compliance where we regulate directly, those where we are consultees or advisers, or otherwise have influence. The REPs necessitate the use of best available techniques (BAT) by operators and we have written separate supporting guidance on the assessment of BAT.
The primary target audience for the REPs is our radioactive substances regulators but they will also be of value to those we regulate. We have developed the REPs as part of our commitment to modernising regulation and improving our effectiveness and efficiency.
Defra is consulting on the revised UK Strategy for Radioactive Discharges 2006-2030 and on Statutory Guidance to the Environment Agency on the regulation of radioactive discharges into the environment. These documents provide additional information about the adoption and application of BAT and the role of the REPs in the context of radioactive discharges. You can view the Defra consultation by following the link on the left under 'see also'.
You can respond to the consultation by downloading the principles, BAT guidance and consultation questions from the left hand navigation. Please return this, along with any other concerns or questions relating to this consultation, to REPS@environment-agency.gov.uk.
