New nuclear power stations

The Government announced they were inviting energy companies to bring forward plans to build and operate new nuclear power stations as part of the future UK energy mix on 10 January 2008.

As a nuclear regulator, we are working closely with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) (which includes the Office for Civil Nuclear Security) to assess new nuclear power station designs. Together, we have set up a Joint Programme Office to administer the generic design assessment process.

Latest News 20 March 2008

Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) have confirmed to Government their intention to withdraw their ACR-1000 reactor design from participation in the next steps of GDA. The withdrawal of the design follows the Government's recent announcement that only three of the four designs submitted would be shortlisted for the next stage of the GDA process. Therefore the three remaining designs will be taken forward.
